桔梗の妹・楓がまだ幼い少女だった頃。百足上臈の身体から取り出された汚れた四魂の玉が桔梗に預けられた。玉を清める役目を負った桔梗は、玉を狙う妖怪たちとの戦いに明け暮れる。そんな時、半妖の犬夜叉と出会う。玉の妖力を求めて襲う犬夜叉を、そのたびに撃退する桔梗。だが、犬夜叉が幼い楓を救ったことから、犬夜叉と桔梗は次第に心を近づける。「四魂の玉を使い人間にならぬか」桔梗の言葉を信じる犬夜叉。だが、玉を狙う奈落の罠が、ふたりの運命を変えてしまう。
English Summary:
This is the first part of a flashback. Kaede witnesses Kikyo and Tsubaki fight a swarm of demons. The grave of Midoriko in a limestone cave reacts to the Shikon Jewel inside a slain yet resurrected Mistress Centipede. Tsubaki places a curse on Kikyo whenever she was to fall in love deeply. Kikyo is assigned to guard and purify the Shikon Jewel inside the village’s shrine. After meeting Inuyasha, she realizes that he wants to have the Shikon Jewel transform from a hanyō to a full-fledged, full-blooded yōkai. She gradually falls in love with him, feeling grateful for what he has unconditionally done and with her. Inuyasha gives Kikyo a pearl oyster containing cosmetics as a gift, which belonged to his human mother.
